Calls to shut down Baghdad GSM network
The US lead authority in Iraq has apparently asked the Bahrain based batelco to shut down a small network it has set up in Baghdad. The company has reportedly invested around US$5 million building a network which has the capacity to handle 15,000 calls a day. It has set up five base stations, which handled 3,000 calls on the first day of operation. The network also has a roaming agreement with the company's home operation in Bahrain, making it much easier for GSM handset users to gain access to the network. more

Bahrain users get free calls - due to billing fault
Bahrain's GSM network, batelco suffered a failure on its PrePay subscriber billing software on Friday last week. As a result some calls made on Friday night may not have been registered by the network - effectively giving the customers free phone calls. The fault was made worse as news spread about the billing problems and the network suffered congestion as people took advantage to made international phone calls. more

Ericsson and Bahrain Telecommunication Company (batelco) have signed contracts for the further expansion of batelco's existing GSM network and its upgrade to GPRS. An agreement is also in place to begin EDGE trials in the second half of 2002. Under the contracts, Ericsson will provide the equipment, software and services for the expansion and upgrade. The contracts are together valued at more than US$26 million. Upon completion of the expansion project, batelco's network will accommodate more than 400,000 subscribers and offer GPRS capability. more
