Alcatel-Lucent Offers Converged RAN for CDMA Networks Migrating to LTE
Alcatel-Lucent says that it has expanded its wireless networking portfolio to inlcude a Converged RAN" (radio access network) which enables mobile service providers to offer both 3G CDMA and LTE services using a common network infrastructure. One of the key elements of the Converged RAN is the software defined radio (SDR) technology which has been available on the current Alcatel-Lucent base stations for a number of years already. more

T-Mobile UK to Shut-Down 5,000 Base Stations
UK mobile operator, T-Mobile is reported to be planning a shut-down of some 5,000 of its base stations as part of its network sharing deal with Hutchison 3G UK. The UK trade magazine, Mobile Today said that both networks are removing transmitters as they begin to share resources. more

Base Stations Bring Electricity to Rural Villages
Three rural villages in Armenia's Gegarkunik region have been connected to the mains electricity supply - as a result of the mobile operator, VivaCell-MTS requiring a power supply for its base stations in the region. VivaCell ran high voltage power cables to its Base Transceiver Stations (BTS), and then ran extra power supplies to an electricity sub-station (power transformer) in each of the villages. more

Huawei Wins Indonesian Network Contract
Huawei has been chosen by AXIS, IndonesiaÃ's newest GSM and 3G operator, as a key partner in rolling out its full service national network. Under the agreement, Huawei will design, build, deploy and manage AXISÃ' 2G/3G network within the island of Java, Bali, Lombok, Kalimantan and Sulawesi for a period of three years to 2010. Specifically, Huawei will be responsible for close to 4,000 sites across the country, on GSM and 3G radio access, optical and microwave transmission. more
