1.45 Million BWA/WiMAX Subscribers Added in 2008
Worldwide, approximately 1.45 million BWA/WiMAX subscribers were added during 2008, while the WCDMA subscriber base increased by more than 90 million. The average quarter-over-quarter subscriber growth rate in 2008 was 21.5%, according to the 7th issue of the 4GCounts Quarterly Report from Maravedis. more

Alcatel-Lucent Offers Converged RAN for CDMA Networks Migrating to LTE
Alcatel-Lucent says that it has expanded its wireless networking portfolio to inlcude a Converged RAN" (radio access network) which enables mobile service providers to offer both 3G CDMA and LTE services using a common network infrastructure. One of the key elements of the Converged RAN is the software defined radio (SDR) technology which has been available on the current Alcatel-Lucent base stations for a number of years already. more

DoCoMo Demos Mobile Downloads at 120Mbps using LTE Test Network
Fujitsu has announced that, in collaboration with NTT DoCoMo, they have conducted successful field testing for Long-term Evolution (LTE), using 4x4 MIMO technology. The testing took place in the Special Ubiquitous Zone, an area of the northern Japanese city of Sapporo in Hokkaido, designated by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in 2008 as a wireless communications testing area, and used prototypes of the wireless LTE base stations developed jointly by NTT DoCoMo, Fujitsu and Fujitsu Laboratories which, with the use of MIMO technology, resulted in high-speed wireless transmissions in the range of 120 Mbps (using 10 MHz bandwidth) in Sapporo's urban environment. more

Dialog Telekom to Deploy Solar and Wind-Powered Base Stations in Sri Lanka
Sri Lankan operator, Dialog Telekom is to deploy ten solar and wind-powered base stations in the country. The trial, which will deploy five off-grid and five on-grid base stations, has seen two sites go live this month and a further eight sites will go live in March and April this year. The goal of the trial is to use a number of different scenarios with equipment from eight different vendors to test the range of options available and the commercial viability of rolling out mobile networks using renewable forms of energy. more
