KDDI Awards LTE Contracts to Motorola and NEC

Italian Operators Sign Tower Sharing Deal

Telecom Italia and 3 Italia have signed a "co-siting" agreement for the sharing of radio mobile access sites which regards both existing sites and those which will be built in the future. The objects of the agreements are the so called "passive" infrastructures: poles, cables, electricity supply and conditioning systems and other civil infrastructures.  more

Spanish WiMAX Coverage to be Expanded

ZTE SDR Base Station Records Over 100,000 Volume Shipment

China's ZTE has announced that its SDR base station recorded a total volume shipment of 107,000 units in less than one year: since its latest product advancement in October 2008 through April 2009. ZTE attributes this to the growing popularity of SDR (Soft Defined Radio) technology favoured by global operators, including those in fast developing mobile markets such as China and India.  more

Femto Forum Outlines Case for LTE Femtocells

The femtocell trade body, the Femto Forum today outlined the case for LTE femtocells at the LTE World Summit in Berlin. The principal performance benefit that femtocells bring to LTE, cited by the Femto Forum, is that they will ensure more users receive peak data rates more of the time, especially inside buildings where the vast majority of mobile broadband data is consumed and where the service quality is lower than outside. Femtocells achieve this by maximising spectrum re-use and by ensuring power, and therefore network capacity, is not wasted by trying to penetrate buildings.  more

Motorola Deploys Location Based Services for NTT DoCoMo

Motorola has announced that Japan's NTT DoCoMo will deploy its Mobile Advanced Location System (MALS) to power DoCoMo's new location based services. Motorola MALS is compliant with the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Secure User Plane Location (SUPL) 1.0 standard, allowing faster and more accurate detection of the position of DoCoMo's users, even when using base stations of overseas carriers in the roaming areas.  more
