Vodafone Ghana Outsources Management for 750 Base Station Towers

Vodafone has signed a 10-year deal with African tower company, Eaton Towers to take over the operations and co-location management of 750 telecom towers for Vodafone Ghana. Over the life of the contract Eaton expects to invest up to $80 million on upgrading and improving the existing towers and on improving Vod­afone's coverage in Ghana. Eaton will also develop the existing infrastructure and build new towers.  more

Huawei Launches Vodafone Co-Developed Base Station for Rural Areas

Huawei says that it has launched a 2G base station (BTS) designed for use in rural communities in developing markets. The “EasyGSM BTS” is an All IP-based compact BTS, and was co-designed and developed in collaboration with Vodafone in the two firms’ joint Radio Mobile Innovation Centre based in Madrid, Spain.  more

Vodafone Granted Extra Time to Expand its Qatari Network

Qatar's telecoms regulator, ictQATAR has amended the license recently granted to Vodafone to grant the company an additional six months to achieve national coverage. Under the terms of its license Vodafone Qatar was required to achieve 98% population coverage and launch full services by 1 March 2009. The revised terms require 98% coverage by 1 September 2009 and the launch of services, including two-way phone mobile and SMS, by 1 July 2009.  more

Active RAN Sharing Could Save Operators $60 Billion

A new study from ABI Research finds that the worldwide combined OPEX and CAPEX savings from active infrastructure sharing could amount to as much as $60 billion over the next five year period. The study finds that operators could enjoy at least 40% cost savings in addition to those available from passive site sharing.  more

Hutchison Telecom Confirms Spin-Off Plans for Hong Kong Holdings

Hong Kong based Hutchison Telecom has reported a 16% rise in full-year revenues to HK$24 billion (US$3.1 billion) and an increase of 16.8% in EBITDA to HK$6.14 billion (US$791 million). Net income dropped precipitously to HK$1.88 billion (US$242 million) from the extraordinary HK66.8 billion a year ago - which was largely due to the one-off gain from the sale of its Indian interests to Vodafone.  more

Vodafone New Zealand Expects to Complete 3G Upgrade Early

Vodafone Trialling Microwave Ethernet for 3G Backhaul

Vodafone Portugal Tests Mobile Downloads at 16 Mbps
