Operators to Spend $3.3 Billion on LTE Base Station in 20122

Wireless operators will spend about $3.3 billion building LTE base stations in 2011, according to the most recent study of LTE­ from ABI Research. That expenditure will have purchased some 142,000 base stations worldwide. LTE base station equipment spending is expected to rise sharply between 2011and the end of 2012.  more

Wireless Backhaul to Go Next-Generation by 2012

Based on IDC's research of the Asia/Pacific (including Japan) carrier network equipment market, IDC predicts that there will be over 3 million basestations and over 1.8 million cell sites in by 2012, representing a growth of 24.3% and 10.7% respectively from 2008. Approximately half of these sites will be connected to fiber through Carrier Ethernet. Urban 3G/High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) basestations will be linked to fiber by 2011 in most markets in the region.  more

WiMAX Subscribers in India to Exceed 13 Million by 2013

Finland Awards Radio Spectrum for LTE Networks

Finland's TeliaSonera, Elisa and DNA have been allocated additional frequencies enabling them to start building fourth generation (LTE) mobile networks. The frequencies are located in the 1,800 MHz band, which will make Finland the first country in Europe to allow the use of 4G LTE technology at such low frequencies.  more

Turkish Operator Deploys Wind-Powered Base Station

Turkish mobile network operator, Avea has deployed what it says is the first hybrid wind-powered base station in the country. The new 6kW wind turbine was manufactured by Scottish firm Proven Energy and installed by Turkish resellers Girasolar.  more

1.45 Million BWA/WiMAX Subscribers Added in 2008

Worldwide, approximately 1.45 million BWA/WiMAX subscribers were added during 2008, while the WCDMA subscriber base increased by more than 90 million. The average quarter-over-quarter subscriber growth rate in 2008 was 21.5%, according to the 7th issue of the 4GCounts Quarterly Report from Maravedis.  more

Active RAN Sharing Could Save Operators $60 Billion

A new study from ABI Research finds that the worldwide combined OPEX and CAPEX savings from active infrastructure sharing could amount to as much as $60 billion over the next five year period. The study finds that operators could enjoy at least 40% cost savings in addition to those available from passive site sharing.  more

Alcatel-Lucent Offers Converged RAN for CDMA Networks Migrating to LTE

Alcatel-Lucent says that it has expanded its wireless networking portfolio to inlcude a Converged RAN" (radio access network) which enables mobile service providers to offer both 3G CDMA and LTE services using a common network infrastructure. One of the key elements of the Converged RAN is the software defined radio (SDR) technology which has been available on the current Alcatel-Lucent base stations for a number of years already.  more
