1.45 Million BWA/WiMAX Subscribers Added in 2008

Worldwide, approximately 1.45 million BWA/WiMAX subscribers were added during 2008, while the WCDMA subscriber base increased by more than 90 million. The average quarter-over-quarter subscriber growth rate in 2008 was 21.5%, according to the 7th issue of the 4GCounts Quarterly Report from Maravedis.  more

Vietnamese Network Signs Network Upgrade Contract

Vietnam's Vinaphone has contracted with Alcatel-Lucent to upgrade its GSM network in 16 northern provinces with EDGE data services. The contract was signed through Alcatel-Lucent's Chinese subsidiary, Alcatel-Lucent Shanghai Bell. The deployment is currently underway and the expanded network will begin providing commercial services in April 2009.  more

Craig Wireless Signs Greek WiMAX Reseller Deal

Craig Wireless' Greek subsidiary Craig Wireless Hellas has entered into an agreement to provide Net One subscribers with access to its WiMAX network. The agreement provides for non-exclusive access to the Network for an indefinite term, within the coverage area of the Network in the Athens and Thessaloniki regions of Greece.  more

China Telecom - the First to Offer EPON-based 3G Services

ZTE has announced that China Telecom has deployed its Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPON) Solution, which enabled China Telecom to cutover between EPON technology, which carries CDMA 1X services and EVDO data services to implement the world's first EPON technology that offers 3G services.  more

Vodafone Granted Extra Time to Expand its Qatari Network

Qatar's telecoms regulator, ictQATAR has amended the license recently granted to Vodafone to grant the company an additional six months to achieve national coverage. Under the terms of its license Vodafone Qatar was required to achieve 98% population coverage and launch full services by 1 March 2009. The revised terms require 98% coverage by 1 September 2009 and the launch of services, including two-way phone mobile and SMS, by 1 July 2009.  more

Active RAN Sharing Could Save Operators $60 Billion

A new study from ABI Research finds that the worldwide combined OPEX and CAPEX savings from active infrastructure sharing could amount to as much as $60 billion over the next five year period. The study finds that operators could enjoy at least 40% cost savings in addition to those available from passive site sharing.  more

Nortel Software Upgrade Reduces GSM Base Station Power Consumption

Nortel is launching a "Smart Power Management" software platform that the company says helps reduce radio network power consumption in GSM networks and delivers significant energy and cost-savings for mobile operators. Power reductions that can be achieved through this solution were demonstrated in a trial conducted in February 2009 with China Mobile Communications Corporation (CMCC) - the parent company of Hong Kong listed China Mobile.  more

US Regional Carrier Selects Nortel for CDMA Expansion

Texas based wireless network, Pocket Communications has launched a new network to serve markets in the U.S. Northeast plus expanding the capacity of its South Texas wireless network with 3G CDMA technology from Nortel Networks. Pocket is now offering service to new subscribers in parts of Connecticut and Massachusetts, and will be launching its service in parts of New York state in 2009.  more
