Based on IDC's research of the Asia/Pacific (including Japan) carrier network equipment market, IDC predicts that there will be over 3 million basestations and over 1.8 million cell sites in by 2012, representing a growth of 24.3% and 10.7% respectively from 2008. Approximately half of these sites will be connected to fiber through Carrier Ethernet. Urban 3G/High-Speed Packet Access (HSPA) basestations will be linked to fiber by 2011 in most markets in the region. more

NXP Demonstrates Energy Efficient RF Base Station Amplifier
Semiconductor firm, NXP has unveiled what it says is the world’s most efficient 3-way Doherty amplifier, enabling a new standard of energy efficient RF base stations. Based on a novel concept, the Doherty circuit performs at efficiency levels in excess of 47%, at an average power output of 48dBm, a gain of 15dB and peak to average ratio of 8dB for a multicarrier W-CDMA signal. The current design covers the W-CDMA standard for band I operation. The design is tailored towards high yield, minimum tuning, volume manufacturing. more
Huawei Launches Vodafone Co-Developed Base Station for Rural Areas
Huawei says that it has launched a 2G base station (BTS) designed for use in rural communities in developing markets. The “EasyGSM BTS” is an All IP-based compact BTS, and was co-designed and developed in collaboration with Vodafone in the two firms’ joint Radio Mobile Innovation Centre based in Madrid, Spain. more
