Turkey to Get Number Portability by Year-End

Turkey's telecoms regulator has announced that it will mandate mobile number portability to be launched in November this year. Tayfun Acarer, head of the Telecommunications Board told reporters that he expects the infrastructure should be in place within the next couple of months, but the service would not launch immediately to allow for testing.  more

Europe's Top Ten Networks - All Now Over 20m Customers

In Issue 98 of the Mobile World Briefing, when last reviewing the European market, we suggested that "if the normal seasonal pattern is repeated in Q4, then the final period of the year should see something between 25-30m new connections, enough to take penetration up to 110%". Vodafone Accuses Turkcell of Obstructing Mobile Number Portability

Vodafone Turkey CEO Attila Vitai has accused market leader, Turkcell of curbing efforts to introduce mobile number portability into the country. Turkish Operator Launches Windows Live Messenger Service

Turkey's avea has launched a Windows Live Messenger service to its ten million mobile subscribers by using Colibria software. Microsoft Comfirms Mobile Content Provider Purchase

Openwave Systems says that it has completed the discussions announced last week with Microsoft and will sell its Musiwave subsidiary to the IT giant for US$46 million in cash. Microsoft will also take on approximately $4 million in net debt.  more

Alcatel-Lucent Wins Turkish IP/MPLS Upgrade

Alcatel-Lucent says that it has been selected by Turkey's avea to start migrating voice, signaling and networking services onto an IP/MPLS-based network. The converged network will be able to support voice, broadband data services (GPRS, Edge and 3G), signaling and billing traffic, 2G/3G voice traffic as well as future multimedia services. Alcatel-Lucent's solution is part of its Mobile Evolution Transport Architecture (META), a comprehensive vision for the evolution of mobile networks from TDM to all-IP.  more
