Vodafone Turkey Lost 1.24 Million Subscribers in Q1 2009

Turkey followed Italy and the UK in suffering a quarterly loss to its customer base. The 1.44m decline was the largest ever seen, as well as being the first for seven years. At the end of Q1 09, the total customer base stood at 64.48m, just 3.1% above the Q1 08 total. This was the lowest growth rate ever recorded in the Turkish market and 12.3pp below the year-earlier rate. Penetration fell back below 90% during the quarter, finishing on 89.0%. However, there is every chance that a resurgence in growth will take penetration over 100% once 3G is launched, with reports suggesting that the first W-CDMA networks will be operational very soon.  more

Avea Appoints a New CEO

Turkish mobile network operator, avea has named Erkan Akdemir as its new CEO, replacing Cüneyt Türktan who had held the post since 2006. Türktan is to take up the role of strategic advisor to the chairman of Oger Telecom for new-generation wireless investments with effect from the end of this month.  more

Turkish Operator Deploys Wind-Powered Base Station

Ericsson Wins 4-Year 3G Upgrade Contract in Turkey

Turkish operator avea has signed a four year contract with Ericsson for a WCDMA/HSPA upgrade. Under the agreement, Ericsson will be one of the main suppliers and will integrate and deploy WCDMA/HSPA radio access and packet core networks, as well as a complete mobile-backhaul solution based on microwave transmission and optical transport.  more

Vodafone Turkey Cuts 260 Jobs

Just a few days after apparently announcing plans to hire 500 extra staff this year, Vodafone Turkey has announced 260 job cuts as part of a corporate restructuring. The job cuts came as part of "an organizational overhaul" and to increase efficiency, the company said in a statement.  more

Turkey Awards 3G Licenses

Turkey has awarded three 3G licenses to the incumbent operators following an auction to battle over the spectrum allocation. Turkcell won the largest block (A License) with a bid of €358 million ($462 million), followed by Vodafone and avea with bids of €250 million (US$323 million) and €214 million (US$276 million) respectively.  more
