Optus Fined for Breaching Australian Anti-Spam Laws

Australian mobile operator, Optus has been fined AU$110,000 (US$74,000) by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) for breaches of the country's anti-spam legislation. The infringement notices were in relation to 20,000 commercial electronic messages sent by Optus that ACMA alleges failed to provide clear and accurate sender identification.  more

Missed Calls Classed as Spam

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has advised two companies alleged to have engaged in 'missed call' marketing that these marketing activities are likely to constitute serious and extensive contraventions of the country's Spam Act 2003. Following ACMA's intervention the companies responsible have now stopped making these calls while ACMA's investigations are undertaken. more

Fines Over SMS Spam

The Australian Communications and Media Authority has fined two companies a total of US$10,000 (AU$13,200) for breaches of the Spam Act 2003. ACMA found the companies sent out more than fifty thousand commercial SMS messages marketing an investment scheme for software providing horse racing tips. more
