Sprint Outlines WiMAX Expansion Programme
USA network, Sprint Nextel has announced the next markets in its WiMAX network rollout. The network is being folded into the national WiMAX network being built by its joint-partner, Clearwire. More US Households Abandoning the Landline
More and more USA households are dropping their landlines and opting to go completely wireless. According to Telephia, the largest provider of consumer research to the communications and new media markets, households in Detroit and Minneapolis-St. Paul have the highest rate of wireless substitution among the 20 largest cities in the country. Detroit and Minneapolis-St. Paul posted household wireless substitution rates of 19 and 15.2 percent, respectively. The Tampa metropolitan area secured a 15.1 percent rate, representing nearly 177,000 households. Nearly 219,000 (14.3%) households in atlanta and 220,000 (13.6%) households in Washington D.C. cut the cord. Rounding out the top 10 were Phoenix , Seattle , Denver , Boston and Los Angeles . more
The cost of using a cell phone in the Top 25 U.S. markets remained flat in January, according to Econ One, which studies the cost of wireless service. The average cost of service, calculated based on four typical levels of use across the top 25 markets, rose 0.1% compared to December 2003. more

Marconi Corporation has signed a multi-year contract with the USA based CDMA carrier, MetroPCS to provide a turnkey solution that supports the transition from Phase I to Phase II E911 services and compliance standards. Cell phone usage costs continue to fall
The cost of using a cell phone in the USA declined 4.0% in November, according to the consultants Econ One. The decline in November followed a 1.4% price reduction reported in October. Cost reductions by several of the major national carriers were responsible for the sizable cost decline in November. The overall cost decline from the previous month amounted to US$1.50. Cost declines were witnessed in all of the Top 25 markets. more

Kyocera Wireless has received a contract for the delivery of wireless phones to start-up wireless carrier MetroPCS in the USA. MetroPCS will use the Kyocera 2235 as its flagship handset for the launch of its CDMA2000 1X service. more

Two more networks sign up for location based services
TeleCommunication Systems, which develops location based services has secured service agreements with two USA cellular networks, Corr Wireless Communications and MetroPCS. Under the agreements, TCS will provide the backbone wireless location technology and service components, via its Xypoint Location Platform, that enable wireless carriers to meet their regulatory obligations under the FCC's E911 order to be able to locate cellular phone users to within 100 yards. With these agreements, TCS is now able to provide wireless location services in more than twenty states to twenty wireless carriers, including Verizon Wireless, U.S. Cellular and Cricket Communications. more

Cell phone tariffs continue to fall in the USA
The average cost of cell phone service in the USA dropped 1.4% in July, following a 3.3% decrease in June, according Econ One, an economic research and consulting firm which studies costs in the wireless industry. The average monthly cost of service in 25 major cities, across four typical usage levels (30, 150, 300 and 600 minutes) was US$37.14 in July. Average costs were down in 23 of the 25 cities surveyed. Only two cities -- Phoenix and Dallas -- showed increases in average costs, and they were minor: 0.4% and 0.1% respectively. The greatest decreases in costs were in San Diego (-7.4%), followed by Chicago (-3.8%) and atlanta (-3.3%). more
