Upwards view: Linux is losing ground

The upwards view of netbooks starts with netbooks and looks up to laptops. It leads to two conclusions. First, the laptop market is becoming increasingly complex, with market segments catered for by a growing variety of low-cost netbooks and laptops. Second, after a strong start, Linux netbooks have now been overtaken by Windows netbooks and Linux is lagging increasingly behind in terms of sales - although Linux's performance in the netbook segment is still outstanding compared to its overall performance in the desktop market.  more

Qualcomm Aiming at Intel's Market

Qualcomm is aiming to move into the territory dominated by the likes of Intel with its Snapdragon chipset platform which is aimed at the mini-laptops more commonly known as netbooks. However, Intel itself is also increasingly moving into the mobile device market, so Qualcomm faces both an opportunity and a risk.  more

Strong Netbook Shipments Buoy Notebook PC Market in Q3'08

Despite what is looking to be a rather dismal fourth quarter for the PC industry as a whole, one very bright spot has emerged. The mini-note PC, also called netbook, category grew at more than 160% Q/Q in Q3'08 as most of the top tier PC brands have now entered the market. asus, which had essentially created the market in late 2007, lost significant share as Acer surged to the top spot, capturing more than 35% of this market.  more

Low-price Mini Notebook PC Shipments to Reach 8.02 Mln Units in 2008

According to MIC (Market Intelligence Center, Taiwan), an ICT industry research institute based in Taipei, worldwide low-price mini notebook PC shipment is expected to reach 8.02 million units in 2008. In 2009 shipment volume is forecasted to reach a scale of 18.3 million units, growing 128% annually.  more

Vodafone to Sell Asus EeePC Laptops

Vodafone Portugal has teamed up with Taiwan's asus to offer a bundled HSDPA USB modem with asus's iconic mini-laptop, the EeePC 701. Among telecommunications operators in Portugal, this PC will be sold exclusively by Vodafone.  more
