2009 Will Be Year of the Mini-Notebook in Asia Pacific

Shipments of mini-notebooks in Asia Pacific will reach four million units in 2009, growing by a robust 82 per cent over 2008, according to Gartner. Growth will stabilise at 20 per cent or more in 2010 and 2011, when mini-notebooks will account for more than 14 per cent of all mobile PCs shipped.  more

Upwards view: Linux is losing ground

The upwards view of netbooks starts with netbooks and looks up to laptops. It leads to two conclusions. First, the laptop market is becoming increasingly complex, with market segments catered for by a growing variety of low-cost netbooks and laptops. Second, after a strong start, Linux netbooks have now been overtaken by Windows netbooks and Linux is lagging increasingly behind in terms of sales - although Linux's performance in the netbook segment is still outstanding compared to its overall performance in the desktop market.  more

North America overtakes EMEA as largest satellite navigation market

North America overtook EMEA (Europe, Middle East and Africa) as the largest regional market for PNDs (portable navigation devices) in the final quarter of 2008, according to the latest research from Canalys. In Q4 2008, the US alone accounted for 52% of the worldwide PND shipment total, compared to 36% for EMEA.  more

Mini-Notebooks Made Explosive Entry into EMEA PC Market in 2008

Following a major surge in the back-to-school season, mini-notebook momentum continued unabated in the final quarter of the year. Thanks to robust consumer demand in Western Europe in the run up to Christmas, overall EMEA mini-notebook shipments reached 3.6 million units, in line with expectations, representing 20% of total portable sales and 30% of consumer portables in EMEA in 4Q08.  more

Garmin to Launch a Range of Mobile Phones

Navigation device manufacturer, Garmin has teamed up with Taiwan's asusTeK Computer to launch a range of navigation optimised mobile phones. The two firms say that they have already begun joint development on a diverse mobile phone product line, which will be known as the Garmin-asus nüvifone series, with the first models expected this year.  more

Qualcomm Aiming at Intel's Market

Strong Netbook Shipments Buoy Notebook PC Market in Q3'08

Despite what is looking to be a rather dismal fourth quarter for the PC industry as a whole, one very bright spot has emerged. Low-price Mini Notebook PC Shipments to Reach 8.02 Mln Units in 2008

According to MIC (Market Intelligence Center, Taiwan), an ICT industry research institute based in Taipei, worldwide low-price mini notebook PC shipment is expected to reach 8.02 million units in 2008. In 2009 shipment volume is forecasted to reach a scale of 18.3 million units, growing 128% annually.  more
