Handset Shipments Expected to Drop 20% in 2009

Increasing Deployment of UMT at 900Mhz
The pace of commercialisation of UMTS 900 systems has quickened, according to a new Information Paper published by GSA, the Global mobile Suppliers Association. The report notes that for the same service offering and coverage, the number of base station sites in the 900 MHz band can be reduced by 60% compared to that needed for 2100 MHz, and reduce rollout time. more

The global base station market grew by 58.5% in units in 2007, according to the latest report from EJL Wireless Research. UK Operators Sharing 3G Spectrum for Mobile TV Trials
Orange and T-Mobile UK have announced they intend to jointly pilot a new mobile TV and multimedia broadcast service in London using NextWave Wireless' 3G MBMS based TDtv solution. The pilot, scheduled for the second half of 2008, is designed to demonstrate how the cost of providing mobile TV services can be significantly reduced when mobile operators share widely-available unpaired 3G spectrum and a standards-based TDtv broadcast network. more

Asia Pacific Operators in Q3 '07: CDMA staging a revival?
The three months ended September 30th saw a record number of new connections in the Asia Pacific region. Overall, nearly 85 million new customers were connected which is very nearly as many as Germany, Europe's largest economy, has added in the 22 years since mobile service started. The vast majority of these chose to adopt either GSM or WCDMA technology, these two accounting for 66.1m and 9.4m of the total respectively. more

Huawei Tops Q4 2007 Base Station Sales - Report
EJL Wireless Research announces its fourth quarter 2007 base station contract analysis results and says that Huawei took the top spot with 34% of total contracts awarded. There were in total.53 contracts during the quarter, rebounding from Q3, but unlike in Q3, there were no announced billion dollar contracts. more
