Indonesia Overtakes Japan to Take Third Place in Asia Subscriber Rankings
The Asia Pacific region contains five of the world's ten largest mobile markets - China and India, which are the number one and two respectively and Indonesia, Japan and Pakistan, the sixth, eighth and tenth largest. Orange Launches Mobile Banking in Cote D'Ivory
The Orange subsidiary network in Cote D'Ivory (Ivory Coast) has launched a mobile banking service in cooperation with BNP Paribas, through its local subsidiary BICICI. The launch of the service is the first in a planned rollout of the platform into other African countries where Orange operates over the next few months. more

Ericsson Reports Stronger than Expected 3rd Quarter Results
Ericsson has reported stronger than anticipated third quarter earnings after posting an operating profit of SEK5.7 billion (US$772.5 million) excluding restructuring charges. Financial analysts polled by the Reuters news agency had expected a 3rd quarter earnings of around SEK4 billion (US$540 million). Sales climbed by 13% to SEK49.2 billion (US$6.64 billion) with an operating margin 11.5% - which was down on the 12.9% from a year ago - but still higher than expected considering the economic situation. more

Australia's Optus says that it is set to deliver a larger choice of mobile handsets to people in rural areas by partnering with Satellite operator, Thuraya to offer two of ThurayaĆ's new mobile handsets - a Satellite Only and GSM/Satellite dual mode handset. more

Ericsson Q2 Profits Plunge 70%
Ericsson has reported that its second-quarter profit fell 70 percent because of costs to cut jobs and falling sales of phones made by its Sony Ericsson joint venture. Net income fell to SEK1.9 billion (US$320 million) from SEK6.4 billion (US$1.07 billion) a year ago. Revenue rose 2 percent to SEK48.5 billion (US$8.1 billion) in the quarter. more
