Israel's Pelephone 3G base Surpasses 1 Million Mark
Pelephone is the third largest of Israel's four networks, but it was the fastest growing in Q3 08, both in real terms and proportionately. It added 62k customers in the quarter compared to 40k for market leader Cellcom and 36k for second-placed Partner, and its proportionate quarterly growth rate stood at 2.4% compared to 1.3% for both its rivals. At the end of the quarter its active customer base was just short of 2.70m. Nearest rival Partner had 2.88m, which means that its lead over Pelephone was below 200k for the first time in three years. more

PCCW - Mobile Goes EBITDA Positive Thanks to 3G Growth
PCCW operates one of six mobile networks in Hong Kong, where it holds approximately 10% of the total mobile customer base. At the end of Q2 08, it had a total customer base of 1.18m, up 22.9% year on year. In real terms, the yearly gain was 0.22m. more
The rate of mobile customer growth in Russia has fallen to its second-lowest level ever in the first quarter of 2008. However, at 2.73%, the rate of growth was over double the record low seen in the first quarter of 2007, when the number of customers increased by just 1.18%. It is perhaps too early to tell whether this is a sign of renewed impetus in the market or not, but it did serve to increase the rolling annual growth rate from 13.9% for the year to 31st December 2007 to 15.6% in the year to 31st March 2008. As a result, net additions increased to 22.68m for the year to March - the highest total seen since 2006. more

Hutchison Australia: Huge Financial Improvements as Base Grows 27%
Hutchison Australia, which markets its services under the Three brand name, has recorded 27% customer growth in 2007 to finish the year with a base of 1.58m. The growth rate was well above that achieved by any other operator in the Australian market, which is partly to be expected given that Three is also the smallest of the four players, but was also sufficiently high to give the operator second spot in terms of net additions for the year with 333k new connections. This represents the operator's second best annual performance after the 431k new connections recorded in 2004 in the early days of the launch of the W-CDMA network to replace Hutch's old CDMA system. more

USA - Third Quarter Subscriber Growth Overview
The USA's mobile market added 4.85m new connections in Q3 07 to close the quarter tantalisingly close to the 250m milestone, at 248.15m. According to the CTIA, this landmark has been reached with the 250mth customer being connected in early November. Growth has been slowing over the recent quarters, but this latest three months has seen a small hike on both the Q2 07 number of 4.5m and the Q3 06 number of 4.6m. more

Pelephone - Strong annual growth but still in third place
As we predicted in Issue 93 of The Mobile World Briefing, Pelephone remained the third largest operator in the Israeli market at the end of Q3 2007. With 2.56m customers at the end of September, Pelephone was 236k short of nearest rival Partner's total customer base and 457k short of market leader Cellcom. This represents a marginal improvement on the deficits recorded at the end of September 2006, which were 260k and 462k respectively. Net additions in the quarter stood at 47k, up slightly on the Q3 06 figure of 43k, although on a proportionate basis, growth was almost exactly the same with a 1.9% quarterly increase in the total customer base in both quarters. more
