Telecom Italia Mobile Lost 1.5 Million Customers in 2008

The Italian market lost a total of 135k customers over the year, with net losses in Q2 and Q4 trumping the smaller net gains in the other two periods. The year closed with a total base of 88.58m, compared to 88.72m, while penetration dropped from 152.6% to 152.4%.  more

Vodafone Sees Loss of UK Market Share and Lower ARPUs

The UK added over 3m new mobile connections during 2008, to take the total base to 75.75m, equivalent to 124% penetration. The market is one of the most competitive in Europe, if not the world, with five established MNOs and several MVNOs, of which the most successful are Virgin and the increasingly ambitious Tesco.  more

Verizon Profits Rise as Wireless Growth Starts to Slow

US based Verizon Communications has reported a rise in its fourth-quarter profits, although growth in its wireless subscriber base slowed even as landline subscribers continued to shut-down their accounts. The firm recorded a quarterly profit of US$1.2 billion compared to US$1.1 billion a year ago - on sales of US$24.6 billion (compared to US$23.8 billion a year ago).  more

Mobile Tariff Price Cuts Drive Bullish Growth in Germany

Growth in the German mobile market shows little sign of abating despite penetration reaching 127.5% at the end of Q3. Quarterly net additions stood at 2.51m, up from 2.33m in Q3 07, while annual net additions reached 12.53m - the highest figure for almost seven years. In proportionate terms, annual growth stood at 13.6%, up 1.1pp compared to the prior twelve months. Q3 was the fourth successive quarter to see annual growth in excess of 13%, a feat not achieved since the heady days of 2001.  more

UK Records Second Lowest Market Growth Ever

The UK mobile market saw annual growth drop 0.3pp year on year to 4.4%, the second lowest figure ever recorded. In real terms, annual net additions stood at 3.15m, down slightly on the 3.21m recorded in the prior twelve months. Quarterly net additions totalled 0.97m, taking the total connection base to 74.07m and penetration to 121.5% at the end of Q3.  more

Truly mobilising broadband - can operators really cash this cow in?

Mobile internet has undeniably turned a corner in 2008, showing unprecedented growth levels. By 2012 a nine-fold increase in mobile broadband revenues is expected. However, driven by peer to peer and video services, traffic levels are expected to grow much faster to well over 20 times todayÃ's volumes. Arab Region Nears 200 Million Mobile Subscribers

A new report from Arab Advisors Group has found that Arab telecom operators served 194.5 million cellular subscribers and 35 million mainlines by end of June 2008. The report noted that STC's Al Jawwal, Egypt's Mobinil and Vodafone Egypt are the largest Arab cellular operators in terms of subscribers.  more

India's RCom - Higher than average usage fails to produce premium ARPU

Reliance Communications has recorded a record quarter, in terms of new connections, adding 5.3m to its base to take the total to 56.0m. Proportionately, it grew by 10.35% over the quarter and 54.3% over the year. These are impressive numbers, but they are also little better than average - the Indian market as a whole grew by 10.03% and 51.2% respectively, while the market leader, Bharti, managed 11.7% and 58.5%.  more

Eircom - Strong Mobile Growth, but Future is Uncertain

Despite the uncertainty surrounding its future, EircomÃ's 12-month financial results showed solid growth. Recent reports suggest that Australian investment bank Babcock Brown may terminate its management contract with the Babcock Brown Capital (BCM) fund which has direct ownership of Eircom. This may in turn trigger a sale of Eircom, although BCM has publicly stated that it has no intention of selling at present. However, group revenue was up 4.4% to €2,061m, while EBITDA rose by 7.9% to €698m.  more
