Canada Sees Lowest 4th-Quarter Gain Since 1997
Despite the fact that the Canadian mobile market is probably the least developed in the Western world, with a penetration rate of just 63.9% at the end of 2008, it performed poorly in the fourth quarter of the year. Quarterly net additions stood at just under 410k, down from 580k in Q4 07. In fact, this was the smallest fourth-quarter gain since 1997. More worryingly still, this was the first year since 1990 that fourth-quarter net additions were not the highest of the year: the Q3 08 increase was more than 27% higher than the Q4 08 figure at 520k. more

Mobinil Records Record Quarterly Profits
Egyptian mobile operator, Mobinil has reported its highest every quarterly profit, but warned that growth would probably slow during 2009 as the economy remains sluggish. The firm reported fourth quarter profits of EGP 551 million (US$10.4 million), while revenues jumped by 24% to EGP 2.644 billion (US$481 million). more

Mobinil Reports Subscriber Base Up by 1.4 Million
The Egyptian Company for Mobile Services (Mobinil) has reported that it increased its subscriber base in the 3rd quarter by 1.392 million, a 38% increase over the previous year - to reach 18.911 million. more

Orascom Telecom Q2 Profits Down 64%
Egypt based Orascom Telecom has reported a 64% slump in second quarter profits to US$80.8 million, considerably worse than financial analysts had expected. The drop was put down to slowing growth in Bangladesh and Pakistan along with higher financing costs and a US$30 million write down of its Algerian landline subsidiary. A drop was expected due to the removal of a one-off gain a year earlier. more

Orascom Planning Mobile Banking Service
Orascom Telecom is planning to launch a full mobile banking service sometime this year via a subsidiary company. Naguib Sawiris, chairman of the Egyptian group, told the Financial Times the company would be an Orascom subsidiary offering customers the chance to use their mobiles to access banking services, including money transfer. more

Fitch Raises Orascom Telecom Tunisie Outlook to Positive
Fitch Ratings has today affirmed Orascom Telecom Tunisie (OTT) Long-term foreign and local currency Issuer Default ratings (IDR) at 'BB+'. Fitch has changed the Outlooks for both Long-term ratings to Positive from Stable. Fitch has also assigned OTT a National Long-term rating of 'A(tun)' with a Positive outlook. OTT has no issues outstanding as of December 2007. more
