Study Finds Large Cost Savings for Migrating Heavy Data Users to Femtocells

Signals Research Group has completed a whitepaper on the business case for femtocells as part of its ongoing femtocell business modeling initiative with the trade group, the Femto Forum. The study found, across a wide variety of scenarios considering different regions of the world, the business case for femtocells is strong---often doubling the customer lifetime value---and does not depend on any one critical factor or assumption in order to generate a favorable outcome. Further to this, the research demonstrated that femtocells can dramatically reduce the growing financial costs made by heavy mobile broadband data users on the mobile network.  more

1.45 Million BWA/WiMAX Subscribers Added in 2008

Worldwide, approximately 1.45 million BWA/WiMAX subscribers were added during 2008, while the WCDMA subscriber base increased by more than 90 million. The average quarter-over-quarter subscriber growth rate in 2008 was 21.5%, according to the 7th issue of the 4GCounts Quarterly Report from Maravedis.  more

Telus Warns of Falling ARPU Due to Economic Downturn

Canada's Telus has warned that its first quarter wireless segment financial results are expected to be adversely impacted by lower than expected wireless net additions and average revenue per unit (arpu). Wireless operating results are being impacted by a weak macro-economic environment, reflect the acceleration of a negative trend first observed in the fourth quarter of 2008, and are below TELUS' expectations.  more

Sprint Nextel Slips into 3rd Quarter Loss - Loses 1.3 Million Customers

US based Sprint Nextel has swung into a loss as it reported revenues of US$8.8 billion and a loss of US$326 million for the 3rd quarter of this year. This compared with a profit of US$64 million a year ago. If you exclude on-off items, the company says it would have broken even for the quarter.  more

NII Holdings - Revenues and Profits Hit Record Levels

NII Holdings, the Latin American iDEN specialist, has matched the record customer intake seen in Q2, adding 395k subscribers to take its total to 5.84m. This compares with 4.39m one year earlier and 3.19m in Q3 06. The company operates five networks - in Argentina, Mexico, Peru, Brazil and Chile - the first three of which offer services that are directly competitive with the local cellular operators.  more

US Mobile Market Remains Slow as Economic Concerns Mount

During Q2 08, the US mobile market saw a marginal recovery from the depressed levels of Q1, with around 4m net additions, taking the total to 261.5m, up from 243.3m one year ago. Overall penetration has now reached 86.1%, against 80.8% in June 07.  more

Mexico Q1 '08 - Telefonica Gains Ground, but Telcel Maintains Dominance

The Mexican mobile market closed the quarter with 71.041m customers, up 2.345m on the quarter and 11.55m on the year. A majority of the new customers connected to Telcel, the America Movil subsidiary, taking its total base to 51.5m, or 72.5% of the total. This dominance is quite unprecedented and no other operator in any competitive market comes close to matching Telcel's dominance. That the market has been competitive or supposedly competitive ever since mobile communications were first introduced nearly 20 years ago makes the situation all the more extraordinary.  more

Fitch Affirms Sprint Nextel's IDR at 'BB+'; Outlook Negative

In addition, all of the ratings have been removed from Rating Watch Negative. The Rating Outlook on Sprint Nextel and its subsidiaries is Negative. Approximately $23 billion of debt is affected by Fitch's action.  more
