Cost of Supporting Mobile Broadband is Eroding Subscriber Profitability

Mobile broadband services are more expensive to support than any other wireless service and are endangering subscriber profitability for many mobile network operators concludes a new study from WDSGlobal. The study found that the cost to support mobile broadband products and services is up to 200% greater than the cost to support traditional wireless products such as mobile phones. This means that despite revenue uplift from increased data usage, actual subscriber profitability often remains unchanged and sometimes even worsens.  more

Study Finds Large Cost Savings for Migrating Heavy Data Users to Femtocells

Signals Research Group has completed a whitepaper on the business case for femtocells as part of its ongoing femtocell business modeling initiative with the trade group, the Femto Forum. The study found, across a wide variety of scenarios considering different regions of the world, the business case for femtocells is strong---often doubling the customer lifetime value---and does not depend on any one critical factor or assumption in order to generate a favorable outcome. Further to this, the research demonstrated that femtocells can dramatically reduce the growing financial costs made by heavy mobile broadband data users on the mobile network.  more

Third of Asia-Pacific 3G Subscribers Expected to Use PC Dongles

Asia-Pacific was home to some 121 million 3G subscribers in 2007 and an estimated 158.4 million in 2008. By 2013, the region's 3G subscriber base is expected to top 564 million, accounting for about 18.2 percent of all mobile users. With 3G subscriber net additions in record numbers year-on-year, mobile operators are eager to monetize 3G external broadband devices, namely dongles and datacards, to complement their mobile broadband offerings.  more

Non-Handset Devices to Account for $90 Billion in Operator Revenues by 2013

49 million European notebooks will have mobile broadband by 2013

According to a new research report from the analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of notebook PCs with HSPA/LTE mobile broadband connectivity in Europe will grow from 8.4 million in 2007 at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 34.1 percent to 49 million in 2013. The development will be driven by consumer demand for ubiquitous Internet access.  more
