Economic Conditions Reducing Mobile End-User Spending Up to 15%
Mobile end-user arpus dropped between 5% and 15% year-over-year in 4Q-2008 compared to 4Q-2007. China, India, and a number of other Asian markets dropped more than 10%. In Europe the arpu contraction was in the range of -5 to -8%. In North America, YoY arpu did not nosedive, as arpus were buoyed by mobile data. In South America, markets were more mixed with some markets deflating inline and others, like Brazil, managing to hold up arpus. more

Green Packet Wins Taiwanese WiMAX Software Contract
Malaysia's Green Packet says that it has sealed an agreement with Taiwan-based Tatung Infocomm to enhance the connectivity capabilities of Tatung's WiMAX network. The agreement will see Green Packet providing Tatung with a customised edition of its Intouch Connection Management Platform. This provision will greatly improve Tatung InfoComm's ability to offer seamless mobility across networks over secured mobile VPN, for example a user moving from Tatung WiMAX to Wi-Fi and back to a WiMAX coverage area. more

Cost of Supporting Mobile Broadband is Eroding Subscriber Profitability
Mobile broadband services are more expensive to support than any other wireless service and are endangering subscriber profitability for many mobile network operators concludes a new study from WDSGlobal. The study found that the cost to support mobile broadband products and services is up to 200% greater than the cost to support traditional wireless products such as mobile phones. This means that despite revenue uplift from increased data usage, actual subscriber profitability often remains unchanged and sometimes even worsens. more

DoCoMo Full-Year Profits Down 3.9%
Japan's NTT DoCoMo has reported a dip of 3.9% in its full fiscal year profits to reach ¥471.9 billion (US$4.93 billion), compared to ¥491.2 billion in the previous year. The average expected by analysts had been a rise in profits to around ¥499.5 billion, according to a Dow Jones Newswires report. Operating income saw a slight rise to ¥831 billion due to a decrease in cost of equipments resulting from decreased number of handsets sold. more

Verizon Communications Quarterly Profit up 5.3%
Verizon Communications has reported that its first-quarter revenues jumped 11.6 percent to US$26.6 billion, compared with the first quarter 2008 - largely thanks to the acquisition of Alltel earlier this year. Excluding the Alltel boost, revenues would have grown by 3.3 percent. more

Telecom Italia Mobile Lost 1.5 Million Customers in 2008
The Italian market lost a total of 135k customers over the year, with net losses in Q2 and Q4 trumping the smaller net gains in the other two periods. The year closed with a total base of 88.58m, compared to 88.72m, while penetration dropped from 152.6% to 152.4%. more

Vodafone Sees Loss of UK Market Share and Lower ARPUs
The UK added over 3m new mobile connections during 2008, to take the total base to 75.75m, equivalent to 124% penetration.
