Alvarion Wins Italian Mobile WiMAX Contract

Alvarion says that it has won a Mobile WiMAX deployment contract from aria, the only telecom operator in Italy with a national WiMAX license. Under the agreement, aria will build a network at the 3.5 GHz frequency to offer broadband services to all 21 Italian regions.  more

Alcatel-Lucent Wins Italian WiMAX Contract

Alcatel-Lucent has been selected by Italian internet service provider, aria as the prime supplier for building and maintaining a nation-wide wireless broadband network based on WiMAX 802.16e-2005 (Rev-e) technology. Flash animation for mobile phones

Nazomi Communications and Digital aria have announced that Digital aria's Mobile Flash Animation engine has been adapted to be accelerated by Nazomi's JA108 multimedia application processor. This will result in Mobile Flash Animation frame rates of 15 frames per second. South Korea's SK Telecom has agreed to utilize the enhanced Flash capability in its GIGA platform. more

Turkish networks to merge

Turkey's two newest GSM networks, aria and Aycell have agreed to merge their networks. In the newly merged entity, TIM and Turk Telecom will hold 40% of the new company, with IS Bank taking the remaining 20%. Currently, Aycell is wholey owned by the landline operator, Turk Telecom while aria is 49% owned by Telecom Italia Mobile (TIM) and 51% owned by the local banking group, Is Bank. more

Turkish network blocks national roaming order

Turkey's GSM network, Turkcell has resorted to court action to prevent the telecoms regulator imposing a national roaming agreement with the new market entrant, aria. The regulator had ordered the two companies to sign a commercial agreement by the end of business today. aria is a joint venture between Telecom Italia Mobile and the local bank Is Bankasi. more

Turkish network delays expansion plans

Turkey's fourth cell phone network, Aycell which is owned by the state controlled land-line network, Turk Telekom has delayed plans for a tender for a US$1.5 billion infrastructure tender by five days to September 24th. This could follow on from an announcement a couple of months ago from the other new market entrant, aria which is backed by the Is Bank and TIM that it is to reduce its network expenditure program. Turkish third network goes live

Turkey got a third GSM network yesterday when the aria network went into commercial operation. The GSM network, owned by Telecom Italia and the Turkish bank, Isbank will have coverage limited to just Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir initially. The company's license allows it to offer roaming services onto the existing GSM networks, but has been unable to conclude the commercial negotiations yet." more
