IDC Predicts Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments To Fall 8.3% in 2009
The worldwide mobile phone market felt the full effects of the economic crisis in the fourth quarter of 2008 as shipments fell 11.6% year over year, marking the first time the holiday quarter has not recorded double digit growth in seven years. This closed out a year that was dismal at best, yet overall 2008 managed to grow 4.3% over 2007. This has set the stage for what IDC predicts to be a very rough 2009, with the most recent market forecast anticipating growth of -8.3% for the year. more

Nielsen Mobile has estimated that there are 3.6 million mobile subscribers 13+ actively using the apple iPhone, as of October 2008. While some sources suggest that the iPhone has overtaken Motorola's RAZR in sales, their analysis of Q3 acquisitions shows a very close race at the top. Among those subscribers who acquired their phone in the past three months, iPhone had a 3% market share in Q3 2008, behind the Motorola RAZR V3 series which still had a 5% share of recently acquired devices. more

Motorola Sues RIM for Poaching Staff
Motorola is suing rival handset manufacturer, Research in Motion after it claimed that company has been poaching its staff. The lawsuit, filed last week says that RIM lured away some 40 of its employees in Florida since the beginning of this year. more
