iPhone 3GS: 'lack of innovation' hides true assets
Opinion by Ovum's Tony Cripps, principal analyst
apple's faithful may be disappointed with the iPhone 3GS's apparent failure
to move the smartphone goalposts, but the refinement of the device through
continual software platform evolution remains a key differentiator that others
should emulate where possible.
The iPhone's real beauty is its ability to refresh itself
apple's latest iPhone offered few surprises to those familiar with the iPhone
SDK 3.0 - new features are, after all, ultimately constrained by the
capabilities of the device's software. While this might disappoint apple's
devoted followers, underlying this gradual evolution is apple's key
contribution to the smartphone space - namely proving the value of firmware
upgrades to refresh its devices, whether the new iPhone 3GS, its predecessors or
its iPod Touch cousins.

Android based Netbooks to Emerge in 2009
Opinion by Laurent Lachal, Ovum Open Source Research Director
Upwards view: Linux is losing ground
The upwards view of netbooks starts with netbooks and looks up to laptops. It
leads to two conclusions. First, the laptop market is becoming increasingly
complex, with market segments catered for by a growing variety of low-cost
netbooks and laptops. Second, after a strong start, Linux netbooks have now been
overtaken by Windows netbooks and Linux is lagging increasingly behind in terms
of sales - although Linux's performance in the netbook segment is still
outstanding compared to its overall performance in the desktop market.

iPhone in China: China Mobile or China Unicom?
Opinion by Sherrie Huang, analyst at Ovum
The iPhone distribution negotiations between apple and China Mobile were first
reported in 2007. While many expected to see the two shake hands, no deal has
yet been announced and it is now rumoured that apple will partner with China
Unicom instead. What is interesting is how the competitive environment will
influence any cooperation.

Opinion piece by Tony Cripps, principal analyst at Ovum
Nokia's first proper touch-screen handset will reach several key European

Nokia kick-starts GPS market in Europe
Opinion piece by Tony Cripps and Michele Mackenzie, principal analysts
According to a new Ovum forecast, the market for GPS-enabled mobile devices
will grow rapidly, from an estimated 163.9 million shipments in 2007 to almost
572 million in 2012. In the early years this growth has been driven by the CDMA
players, namely Qualcomm, serving large CDMA markets such as the US, where the
E911 mandate stipulates the use of location-based technologies in handsets, and
markets such as Korea and Japan where demand for location-enabled services is
higher than in other regions.

Nokia getting on top of handset media portability
Opinion by Tony Cripps, principal analyst at Ovum
Nokia has greatly extended the range of its multimedia codec support in the
fifth edition of its S60 platform for Symbian OS, in an effort to overcome the
problems of multimedia portability arising from codec proliferation. An
important addition to the core is Microsoft's Windows Media Audio (WMA)
format, which largely completes Nokia's audio codec support. However, some
gaps still remain, notably the DivX Internet video codec and the popular, and
free, Ogg family.
