China Mobile Profits Up; But ARPU Down
The Hong-Kong listed arm of China Mobile has reported that its first quarter profits rose by 5.2% compared to the year before, to reach RMB 25.21 billion (US$3.69 billion). Operating revenues reached RMB 101.3 billion, representing an increase of 9.2% compared to the same period of last year. EBITDA reached RMB 53.4 billion, representing an increase of 7.7% compared to the same period of last year. more

The market for Western European converged mobile devices (commonly referred to as smartphones) experienced a good performance in the last quarter of 2008. According to IDC's European Mobile Phone Tracker, vendors shipped 9.3 million units, 25.9% higher than the 7.4 million shipped in 4Q07. iPhone in China: China Mobile or China Unicom?

The iPhone distribution negotiations between apple and China Mobile were first
reported in 2007. While many expected to see the two shake hands, no deal has
yet been announced and it is now rumoured that apple will partner with China
Unicom instead. What is interesting is how the competitive environment will
