Android Pushes Smartphones Sales Past Feature Phones for First Time

­Western European feature phone shipments continued to decline sharply in 2Q11 as consumers increasingly move to smartphones, according to the latest European Mobile Phone Tracker from International Data Corporation (IDC). Feature phone shipments were down 29% to 20.4 million units in 2Q11, while smartphone shipments increased 48% to 21.8 million units from a year ago. The total Western European mobile phone market, however, declined 3% year on year to 42.2 million units in the quarter, according to IDC.  more

Smartphone Market Grew Nearly 80% in First Three Months of 2011

­The worldwide smartphone market grew 79.7% year over year in the first quarter of 2011 (1Q11), driven by a combination of vendors releasing highly anticipated models, widespread availability of older smartphones at lower prices, and sustained end-user demand. According to IDC, smartphone vendors shipped a total of 99.6 million units in 1Q11, nearly double from the 55.4 million units in the first quarter of 2010.  more

Android Shakes Up U.S. Smartphone Market

The Android operating system (OS) continued to shake up the U.S. mobile phone market in the first quarter (Q1) of 2010, moving past apple for to take the number-two position among smartphone operating systems, according to The NPD Group. The research reveals that based on unit sales to consumers last quarter the Android operating system moved into second position at 28 percent behind RIM's OS (36 percent) and ahead of apple's OS (21 percent).  more

RCS Announces Top-10 Handsets Traded in First Half 2009

Online trader of cellular phones, RCS has announced its trading data for the first half of 2009 for the global open trading market of cellular phones. According to the rankings, listed below, Nokia retained the top three spots with its Smartphones, N95, 5800 and N96 respectively. The Blackberry Bold 9000 took the fourth place, while the Blackberry Javelin Curve 8900 was in sixth place.
