Smartphones with consumer-oriented functionality score best in a customer satisfaction study released today from CFI Group. A new generation of smartphone, lead by Apple's iPhone and including Google's Android and Palm Pre, is bringing in a new customer audience no longer dominated by business users. The CFI Group Smartphone Satisfaction Study, based on surveys of more than 1,000 smartphone users, also finds little relationship between smartphone satisfaction and satisfaction with the provider. Moreover, exclusivity contracts may have drawbacks for carriers if they invite customers drawn to the device and not the provider. more

40% of Existing Smartphone Owners Consider Switching to the iPhone
Four out of ten Blackberry and other smartphone users would switch to Apple's iPhone, as their next smartphone purchase, according to a recent survey conducted by Crowd Science. On the other hand, only 14% of non-Blackberry smartphone users would switch to a Blackberry for their next purchase. Smartphone Shipments in Malaysia Expected to Fall in 2009
Results from IDC's Asia/Pacific Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, 4Q 2008, shows that sales of converged mobile devices (smartphones) in Malaysia dropped by 3% sequentially in the fourth quarter of 2008 (4Q08), but shipments for the full 2008 grew slightly to reach 1.2 million units. The market stayed afloat with strong consumer demand for data-centric converged mobile devices, which continued to beat market expectations by growing 80% year-on-year, while voice-centric converged mobile devices declined by 9%. more

Study Finds Disconnect Between Smartphone Adoption and Ability to Manage Mobile Devices
The mobile device automation vendor, Zenprise has published the findings of an Osterman Research study which found that most enterprise IT departments are not equipped to handle the rapid increase in smartphone adoption. IDC Predicts Worldwide Mobile Phone Shipments To Fall 8.3% in 2009
The worldwide mobile phone market felt the full effects of the economic crisis in the fourth quarter of 2008 as shipments fell 11.6% year over year, marking the first time the holiday quarter has not recorded double digit growth in seven years. This closed out a year that was dismal at best, yet overall 2008 managed to grow 4.3% over 2007. This has set the stage for what IDC predicts to be a very rough 2009, with the most recent market forecast anticipating growth of -8.3% for the year. more

Weak Forecast for Taiwan's Smartphone Shipments in Q1 '09
According to statistics compiled by Taipei-based MIC - Taiwanese smart cellular device shipment volume (including Smartphones and PDA phones) reached 9.61 million units in the fourth quarter of 2008, up 46.4% year-on-year, but down 12.8% sequentially. The industry was affected by the global economic downturn and the reduction of Apple iPhone 3G production after the shipment peak in the third quarter. more

Dual-Mode Cellular/Wi-Fi Handset Shipments to Double from 2008 Through 2010
Shipments of Wi-Fi-enabled cellular handsets will double in volume by the end of 2010, compared to January 2008, and that growth curve is expected to continue through 2013. This data, contained in a new ABI Research study, shows how driven by increasing consumer awareness and demand, new operator business models, and increased value for handset manufacturers, Wi-Fi technology will continue to penetrate deeper into mobile handsets over the next five years. more
