Nokia Denies Reports it is Working on Android Based Smartphone

A report over the weekend that Nokia is working on a smartphone based on the android platform has been denied by the handset manufacturer. The UK Guardian newspaper, citing industry insiders reported that the new touchscreen device will be unveiled at the Nokia World conference in September.  more

Apple and Android Devices See Strongest Relative Usage of Mobile Web Sites

Mobile advertising agency, AdMob, has compared smartphone market share to mobile Web usage to determine that smartphones accounted for nearly 3 times more usage than their relative market share in its April 2009 Mobile Metrics Report. The report also compares usage of mobile Web sites to usage of HTML sites on mobile devices, finding that relative usage of both is highest on Apple and android devices.  more

Sony Ericsson Inches Closer to Android Smartphone Launch

Sony Ericsson is reported to be closer to launching a smartphone running the Google backed android OS, according to Peter Ang, vice president of marketing, Asia Pacific at Sony Ericsson. Smartphone sales buck the recession

A report by Infonetics Research is forecasting an 8% drop in the total number of mobile phones sold in 2009, to 1.1 billion worldwide (down from 1.2 billion in 2008), in line with predictions from Nokia, among others. Smartphones were the best-performing segment of the mobile phones market in 2008 and the only segment to show unit and revenue growth in the second half of the year as the world economy entered recession.  more

Smart Phones Ring in Healthy Growth in 2009 Despite Mobile Meltdown

Although the outlook for the overall mobile handset market continues to dim, smart phones remain a bright spot with global unit growth as high as 11.1 percent in 2009, iSuppli is predicting. iSuppli's optimistic forecast for global smart phone unit shipments calls for 192.3 million units in 2009, up 11.1 percent from 173.6 million in 2008. A more pessimistic outlook calls for growth of only 6 percent this year, reaching 183.9 million units.  more
