On the day that Amazon.com launched its own apps store, the company was handed a lawsuit from Apple over the use of "appstore" in its brandname. Apple has registered the term "App Store" as a trademark, although Microsoft is filing an objection claiming that the term is now sufficiently generic as to be unable to be protected by a trademark. more

Google has nearly caught up to Apple in smart phone popularity and is closing the gap in tablets, according to a survey commissioned by mobile apps services provider, Appcelerator. Android Market Passes 200,000 Apps Landmark
The independent android Market tracking service, AndroLib has released graphs showing that there are now in excess of 200,000 android applications - a doubling of the total in just two months. In October, Google officially announced the passing of the 100,000 mark, although AndroLib's figure is still an unoffical tally. more
