Results released by the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (amta) show that public awareness of mobile phone recycling has risen with collections passing the two million handset and battery mark. Consumer awareness increased (46 to 54%), while fewer people threw their mobiles out with the rubbish, down from 9% last year to 5% in 2006. more

Stolen GSM handsets no longer work in Australia
The Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (amta) says that lost and stolen mobile phones will now be blocked on all GSM networks in Australia from the beginning of this week. "Using new anti-theft technology which shares information with all carriers, lost and stolen mobile phones are now virtually worthless, because once reported as missing they cannot be connected to any network in Australia" said amta Chief Executive Officer, Mr Graham Chalker. more

Telstra to assist in recycling cell phones
The Australian cellular network, Telstra is planning to support a mobile phone recycling initiative by placing recycling bins in the 143 Telstra Shops around Australia. The recycling campaign - Phones for Planet Ark - is a joint initiative of the Australian Mobile Telecommunications Association (amta) and Planet Ark. The campaign's objective is to recycle 120 tonnes of mobile phones and mobile batteries each year. more
