Reality TV Driving Premium SMS Revenues
Telephia has published a report which says that USA premium SMS revenues totaled more than US$273 million, making up 32 percent of mobile content revenue in Q1 2007. Download purchases paid for via premium SMS (at off-portal storefronts) totaled nearly US$215 million, accounting for 79 percent of premium SMS revenue. These off-portal storefront purchases include content such as ringtones and horoscopes. more

SMS finally taking off in the USA
US wireless SMS and Instant Messaging (IM) markets will grow to 75 million and 63 million subscribers respectively in 2007, according to new forecasts from IDC. By the end of 2007, IDC expects annual subscriber revenue from SMS and IM to grow to approximately US$1.9 billion for each service. The first major wireless interactive TV tie-in ever seen in the USA has hit its first major milestone and is the biggest success story in U.S. text messaging history. On Tuesday evening, April 8, 2003, the hit series "American Idol," in which one contestant is voted off each week by viewers at home, received more than 2.5 million text messages, including polls, sweepstake entries, trivia and votes.
