alvarion says that it has won a contract from Orange Botswana for a turnkey WiMAX deployment, using its 4Motion end-to-end solution. The commercial network built at the 2.5 GHz frequency band enables Orange Botswana to provide advanced data services to businesses and homes in Gaborone and Francistown, Botswana's two largest cities with a total population of over 330,000. more

Alvarion and Huawei Join WiMAX Patents Group
alvarion and Huawei have joined the Open Patent Alliance (OPA) - which manages the WiMAX patent pool. alvarion and Huawei join current OPA members Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco, Clearwire, Intel, and Samsung Electronics. As a result, it is expected that licensing terms for patents pertaining to WiMAX, including the associated royalty rates will be more predictable, transparent, and at lower cost. Furthermore the WiMAX patent pool may act as a "one stop shop" where companies building WiMAX solutions can obtain use of the patents more simply, efficiently and cost effectively, under a more competitive royalty structure that charges only for the features required to develop WiMAX products. more

MTN Buys Landline Operator and ISP in Ivory Coast
South Africa based MTN has brought two firms in the Côte dÃ'Ivoire for an undisclosed amount. MTN said in a statement that the acquisition of the two companies was in line with its stated strategy to provide integrated communications solutions in all its markets. more

Nortel Forms WiMAX Partnership with Alvarion
Nortel says that it has realigned its wireless broadband strategy to address early market opportunities that are emerging for WiMAX and LTE. As part of this strategy, Nortel is focusing its main wireless R&D resources on LTE and wireless applications, with WiMAX development re-aligning around an agreement with alvarion to create an end-to-end WiMAX solution. more
