Deep Water Maritime GSM Network Launched
Blue Ocean Wireless, an Irish company focused on expanding communication capability in the merchant maritime sector, has announced the launch of the world's first GSM network for merchant maritime vessels. Blue Ocean Wireless' service will, for the first time, enable seafarers to use their existing mobile phones on board vessels in deep ocean water in exactly same way that they would do in port or on land. The service will be directed at more than one million seafarers serving as crew on more than 40,000 merchant ships in service world-wide. more

altobridge says that it has deployed a base station in a remote location that is only accessible by 4x4 vehicles. altobridge engineers installed the system in 24 hours, trained local personnel in a single afternoon and left the site in the hands of local staff. The network is now being monitored remotely via the company's Network Operations Centre (NOC).
