USA Saw Lowest Ever Annual Subscriber Growth in 2008

Although the American market did not suffer quite so badly as the Canadian market in the fourth quarter, it did see a disappointing figure for net additions. The quarterly gain of 4.15m represented the lowest increase since 2002, and it was 58% lower than the 6.55m recorded in Q4 07. The total market reached 271m customers, equivalent to a penetration rate of 88.8%. Meanwhile, the inexorable decline in annual growth continued: 2008 saw an uplift of just 6.1%, the lowest figure ever recorded in the market in more than 25 years of service.  more

Acquisitions Boosting US Companies' Growth Rates

The acquisitions of Dobson, Rural and Suncom have served to boost the number of net additions over the past twelve months at AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile respectively. AT&T already has Centennial in its sights for 2009, while VerizonĂ's acquisition of alltel is set for closure imminently. As yet, T- Mobile has announced no riposte and in fact, it is difficult to see that there is a meaningful acquisition it could make, unless it wants to enter the murky world of CDMA which it has shown no inclination to do so far.  more

Four out of Seven Small US Networks Lost Customers in Q3

The Verizon-alltel merger, which was recently approved by the FCC, will leave an even greater gap between the large and small US mobile operators; there will be no networks of between 7m and 30m customers. There are currently seven networks with fewer than 7m but more than 0.25m customers, although if AT&TĂ's plan to buy Centennial is successful, there will only be six remaining. At the end of Q3 08, these seven had 17.33m customers in total. Aggregated annual growth stood at 13.1%, compared to 15.9% for T-Mobile ,14.0% for AT&T, 11.2% for Verizon and -6.3% for Sprint.  more

Alltel: Ahead of the market - and Verizon Wireless

The United StatesĂ' fifth largest wireless carrier, alltel, has outpaced the market for the second successive quarter in Q2 2008, registering customer growth of 2.4%, up from 1.5% in 2007. At first glance the result might appear to be true as a sole result of Sprint NextelĂ's worsening fortunes, as the US number three recorded its fourth successive net loss of connections in the three month period to June. However, whilst this is a factor, none of the other three large operators came up to scratch in Q2 as far as alltel was concerned, with Verizon Wireless and T-Mobile only managing growth of 2.2% and AT&T 2.1%. The total base ended Q2 08 at 13.49m.  more
