USA Saw Lowest Ever Annual Subscriber Growth in 2008
Although the American market did not suffer quite so badly as the Canadian market in the fourth quarter, it did see a disappointing figure for net additions. The quarterly gain of 4.15m represented the lowest increase since 2002, and it was 58% lower than the 6.55m recorded in Q4 07. The total market reached 271m customers, equivalent to a penetration rate of 88.8%. Meanwhile, the inexorable decline in annual growth continued: 2008 saw an uplift of just 6.1%, the lowest figure ever recorded in the market in more than 25 years of service. more

Further consolidation in the USA's telecoms market could be imminent as shareholders are reported to be pressuring U.S. Cellular to seek a buy-out from one of its larger rivals. US Wireless Growth Won't Be Stopped by Weak Economy
A Strategy Analytics report is predicting that US cellular subscriber growth will remain strong despite the economic situation, although growth levels will scale back slightly from 2008. US cellular service revenues will also continue to grow, albeit at a slower growth rate of 3.9%, down from 7.5% in 2008. more

Acquisitions Boosting US Companies' Growth Rates
The acquisitions of Dobson, Rural and Suncom have served to boost the number of net additions over the past twelve months at AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile respectively. AT&T already has Centennial in its sights for 2009, while VerizonÃ's acquisition of alltel is set for closure imminently. As yet, T- Mobile has announced no riposte and in fact, it is difficult to see that there is a meaningful acquisition it could make, unless it wants to enter the murky world of CDMA which it has shown no inclination to do so far. more

Four out of Seven Small US Networks Lost Customers in Q3
The Verizon-alltel merger, which was recently approved by the FCC, will leave an even greater gap between the large and small US mobile operators; there will be no networks of between 7m and 30m customers. There are currently seven networks with fewer than 7m but more than 0.25m customers, although if AT&TÃ's plan to buy Centennial is successful, there will only be six remaining. At the end of Q3 08, these seven had 17.33m customers in total. Aggregated annual growth stood at 13.1%, compared to 15.9% for T-Mobile ,14.0% for AT&T, 11.2% for Verizon and -6.3% for Sprint. more

IN DEPTH: The Top Operators by Subscriber Base in North America
The North American mobile market has not changed significantly since our last quarterly review. The ten largest companies, which account for the vast majority of subscribers in the region, have maintained their relative positioning over the quarter, as AT&T heads the table with 71.4m customers, ahead of Verizon (67.2m), Sprint Nextel (52.8m), T-Mobile (30.8m), alltel (13.2m), Rogers and Bell Mobility from Canada (7.4m and 6.3m), US Cellular (6.2m), Telus, the third Canadian company (5.7m) and MetroPCS (4.4m). In fact, the only change over the year is that Bell Mobility has edged ahead of USC by about 50k subscribers to take the seventh place on the list. more

The Fastest Growing Operators in North America
The North American market had a particularly quiet quarter, with fewer than 6m new customers in all on a net basis. In this kind of environment, it is most unlikely that there would be any changes in the list of the largest operators, but the unlikely did in fact happen, with Bell Mobility dropping one place down the rankings from seventh to eighth. This was hardly a major change: it lost five thousand customers in the quarter and US Cellular, which had been breathing down its neck, added 16,000, to move ahead of its Canadian counterpart for the first time. The chart below shows the new pecking order, which is unchanged in all other respects. more
