Florida Residents to Get Mobile Content Refunds from Verizon Wireless
Verizon Wireless and alltel customers in Florida, USA are to get refunds for unauthorised costs for mobile content, the Attorney General Bill McCollum has announced. Verizon Wireless has also agreed to adopt a series of "best practices" standards which will protect consumers from third-party charges, including charges for "free" ringtones and other cell phone content customers either didn't order or didn't realize would result in a monthly charge. more

Verizon Communications Quarterly Profit up 5.3%
Verizon Communications has reported that its first-quarter revenues jumped 11.6 percent to US$26.6 billion, compared with the first quarter 2008 - largely thanks to the acquisition of alltel earlier this year. Excluding the alltel boost, revenues would have grown by 3.3 percent. more

USA Saw Lowest Ever Annual Subscriber Growth in 2008
Although the American market did not suffer quite so badly as the Canadian market in the fourth quarter, it did see a disappointing figure for net additions. The quarterly gain of 4.15m represented the lowest increase since 2002, and it was 58% lower than the 6.55m recorded in Q4 07. The total market reached 271m customers, equivalent to a penetration rate of 88.8%. Meanwhile, the inexorable decline in annual growth continued: 2008 saw an uplift of just 6.1%, the lowest figure ever recorded in the market in more than 25 years of service. more

Managed Mobile TV service provider, MobiTV says that it has now passed the six million subscriber mark for its services. Available across 20 carrier networks, including AT&T and alltel in the U.S., MobiTV attributes its accelerated growth to increasing consumer demand for "television events" on mobile devices, the proliferation of smart phones and a growing trend toward bundling TV and radio services in the operators' wireless tariffs. more
