Algerie Telecom to Spend $6 Billion on Upgrades by 2014
Algeria's state-owned Algerie Telecom has outlined plans to spend US$6 billion over the next few years upgrading both its landline and mobile networks. Plans to privatise the company were put on hold last year pending the upgrades. more

The Fastest Growing Mobile Operators in Africa/Mid-East
The chart shows the fastest growing businesses in the MEA region over a twelve month view. The list includes nine of the names that feature in the Q1 08 list, with Zain Iraq coming in at Algerie Telecom MobileÃ's expense. The top two places are the same in the year as they are in the quarter, with TCIÃ's 9.12m just shading IrancellÃ's 7.95m. The other really strong performances in the region were spread across five main markets - with Mobily in Saudi Arabia taking third place ahead of two Egyptian companies, three from Nigeria and one each from Iraq and Kenya. more

The ten fastest growing mobile businesses in the Middle East and Africa added more than 40 million customers between them over the last year, for an average growth rate of 44%. The first five places are taken by operators for just three countries and indeed, there are only seven separate markets represented in total. All five exceeded the regional average growth rate. more

Turnkey Infrastructure Contract Extended
LCC International has announced the 12 month extension of its turnkey services agreement with Algerie Telecom Mobiles, a fully owned subsidiary of Algerie Telecom. This US$19 million contract extension aims at providing full turnkey services to support Algerie Telecom Mobiles growth efforts over the next year. more

Algeria seperates its telecoms operations
The Algerian government has formally created a stand alone company to manage and develop the state owned telecoms infrastructure. The company is to be known as Algerie Telecom and will have an initial capital of US$1.3 million. The government said that the company's first priority will be to develop its GSM network and manage a government initiated tender for a contract to expand the existing GSM network by 500,000 lines. Orascom Telecom recently won a license to operate the country's second GSM network." more
