Russia's Altimo Blocked From Seizing Turkcell Shares

Turkey's Cukurova Group has won a legal action against Russia's Alfa Group after the Russian group tried to seize 14% of the Turkish mobile network operator, Turkcell. A court in the British Virgin Islands ruled that Russia's Alfa Group could not claim the shares in lieu of a US$1.35 billion debt which Cukurova had offered to pay off.  more

Ukraine to Review Kyivstar Merger

The U­krainian Antimonopoly Committee has decided to review the planned merger of Russia's alfa-group and Telenor's mobile network investments in the country, citing concerns over market share and radio spectrum allocation. The Committee was reviewing an earlier approval for the merger following subsequent complaints from rival network, Astelit (trades as "life").  more

Alfa Group May Need to Reduce Telecom Investments

Russia's Competition Regulator says that he would like to see the Alfa Group sell off some of its telecoms assets to reduce its dominance in the home market. Alfa Group owns 44% of VimpelCom as well as 25% in Megafon. Plans by the two companies to settle long-standing shareholder disputes with overseas investors have drawn criticism as they tend to require the merged entities to be registered outside Russia.  more

MegaFon Denies Interest in Buying VimpelCom Stake

Russia's 3rd largest mobile phone network, MegaFon has denied reports that it is looking to buy a 5% stake in its rival network, Vimpelcom. The company had been reported to have considered the purchase by Russian business daily, Kommersant - but a source told Reuters that the story was not true.  more

Russian Bailiffs to Sell Telenor's Stake in VimpelCom

Russian bailiffs have passed an order to auction off Telenor's shares in Russian mobile network operator, VimpelCom to cover a disputed US$1.7 billion fine. Responding to the news, Telenor said that it has not received any other information from the Bailiff's office than what has been posted on the Bailiff's home page.  more

Alfa Held in Contempt by US Court - Telenor's VimpelCom Shares Arrested in Russia

Telenor has issued a statement announcing that a US federal court in New York yesterday held four Alfa Group companies in contempt for the second time for their failure to comply with the court's orders confirming the Kyivstar arbitration award. Shortly after the hearing ended, Telenor heard rumours that a Russian bailiff acting on behalf of Farimex Product, had arrested all of Telenor's shares in Russian mobile operator VimpelCom. This was confirmed this morning.  more
