The global telecommunications equipment market grew by close to 5% in 2008: a moderate rate of growth that involved a shift in the contribution made by handset components and infrastructure hardware reports IDATE. From a geographical standpoint, Asia was the prime source of growth - specifically China and India - which accounts for two-thirds of the increase in sales worldwide, while representing only just over 40% of the total market (and China and India combined accounting for less than 20%).  more

3G Upgrade Contract for Macau

alcatel-Lucent has been awarded a contract to deploy a CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) high-speed wireless network on the island of Macau for China Unicom. Alcatel-Lucent Wins Japanese 3G Contract

alcatel-Lucent says that it has entered into an agreement to provide the Japanese telecommunications service operator Softbank Mobile with a high-speed mobile access network. Under the terms of the agreement alcatel-Lucent will deploy a 3G UMTS/HSDPA solution that will complement Softbank's current mobile voice service offer and enhance its broadband service portfolio. more

Alcatel-Lucent Snaps Up Nortels 3G Business

alcatel-Lucent has signed an agreement with Nortel to acquire its UMTS radio access business (UTRAN) and related assets for US$320 million. This agreement follows the Memorandum of Understanding alcatel and Nortel signed on September 1, 2006. At the closing of the transaction, alcatel-Lucent will acquire Nortel's UMTS radio access technology and product portfolio, associated patents and tangible assets as well as customer contracts. It will serve an additional sixteen UMTS customers around the world for a combined global footprint that amounts to one in four UMTS operators. more
