Verizon Announces LTE Deployment Plans - Going Live in 2010

Verizon's CTO, Dick Lynch has outlined the company's plans to roll out an LTE upgrade for its wireless network. Lynch announced that Verizon Wireless has selected Ericsson and alcatel-lucent as primary network vendors for its initial LTE network deployments. These two vendors are expected to build the underlying infrastructure that will enable Verizon Wireless to become the first wireless company to offer commercial LTE-based service in the United States, starting in 2010.  more

BSNL - 6 Cos Have Bid For 93 Million GSM Lines Order

NEW DELHI -(Dow Jones)- Indian state-run telecom firm Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd. has received technical and financial bids from six global telecom equipment suppliers for its contract to supply 93 million GSM, communication lines, the company's chairman said Wednesday.  more

Indian Government Investigates Russian Investment in Shyam Telelink

India's Finance Ministry has issued a "show clause" notice on Shyam Telelink after Russia's Sistema recently increased its holding in the company to 73.97% without seeking government approval. The government has a mandatory cap of 75% for foreign ownership, but has to approve any investments above 49%, as Vodafone found when it took control of Vodafone Essar.  more
