Verizon Announces LTE Deployment Plans - Going Live in 2010
Verizon's CTO, Dick Lynch has outlined the company's plans to roll out an LTE upgrade for its wireless network. Lynch announced that Verizon Wireless has selected Ericsson and alcatel-lucent as primary network vendors for its initial LTE network deployments. These two vendors are expected to build the underlying infrastructure that will enable Verizon Wireless to become the first wireless company to offer commercial LTE-based service in the United States, starting in 2010. more

Managed Services for Network Equipment OEMs to Reach $6.4 Billion in 2009
Managed services for mobile networks returned about $19 billion revenue in 2008, ($5.8 billion for network services and $13.4 billion for IT-related services.) Europe led managed services adoption: Tier One operators there face stiff competition, so they have turned to managed services to improve their margins. According to a new study from ABI Research, that $19 billion figure represents only a small part of the potential addressable market. more

On 14 January 2009, Nortel Networks moved beyond talk of divestiture and
speculation of bankruptcy, and filed for creditor protection in Canada and the
US, with Nortel UK entering administration separately under a filing managed by
Ernst & Young. The company reached this point after multiple management
regimes failed in their attempts to remake the company after the bursting of the
telecoms bubble. Nortel's move may result in a more balanced industry
structure for communications equipment.

Alcatel-Lucent Buys Service Management Software Firm
alcatel-lucent has entered into an agreement to acquire Motive, a provider of service management software for broadband and mobile data services for approximately US$67.8 million. The acquisition extends a three-year relationship between alcatel-lucent and Motive. The two companies jointly develop and sell remote management software solutions for automating the deployment, configuration and support of home networking devices called residential gateways. more
