Russian CDMA network operator, Sky Link says that it has received additional radio spectrum from the State Commission for Radio Frequencies (SCRF). The allocation covers the 1920-1935 MHz and 2120-2125 MHz bands and covers the territory of Moscow and the North-Western regions. more

Alcatel-Lucent to Upgrade Russian CDMA Network
Russian CDMA network has signed an agreement with alcatel-lucent to upgrade its network to 3G/CDMA2000 1x-EVDO Revision B radio access network functionality. The EV-DO Rev. B (Evolution-Data Optimized Revision B) standard, entirely based on IP, will allow Sky Link to increase network capabilities without radio channel widening and will significantly increase data speed rates as from base station to subscriber - up to 6.2 Mbit/s, and also from subscriber to base station - up to 3.9 Mbit/s. more

Sequans Shipping its First LTE Chips
Chipmaker Sequans has announced that its first LTE chip, the SQN3010, will soon be sampling with key customers. The chip has been in development for many months and will be delivered first to China Mobile, who selected Sequans to provide TD-LTE chips and USB dongles for its TD-LTE demonstration network. more

Alcatel-Lucent Wins Canadian Network Rollout Contract
Canadian greenfield mobile network operator, Globalive Wireless has awarded a multi-million dollar, three-year contract to alcatel-lucent. Under the agreement alcatel-lucent will supply Globalive with its LTE-ready 3G radio access network offering, including radio network controllers, node Bs (base stations) and a flexible wireless network management system. For the project alcatel-lucent also will provide a variety of professional services including site acquisition and construction, radio frequency network design and optimization as well as overall network planning and design. more

Market research firm Infonetics Research is reporting that telecom carriers spent US$62 billion on outsourced services in 2008, and have plans to increase that spending. The report noted that the top revenue-generating tasks outsourced by service providers in 2008 include network maintenance, application service delivery, network build, and network planning and design. more

India's Tata Teleservices has earmarked a US$2 billion CAPEX for the current financial year to expand its GSM network nationwide. The operator already has a CDMA network, but is planning a GSM overlay after the government granted it permission to operate both technologies on a single license. more
