Oi to Start LTE Tests in Brazil

­Brazilian mobile network is reported to have invited four companies to participate in its LTE trials in the country - alcatel-lucent, Huawei, ZTE and Nokia Siemens Networks. The Teletime website said that there is a market expectation that the first LTE networks will come into operation before the 2014 World Cup.  more

After plunging in the second half of 2010, the GSM RAN market bounced back (up 38% in 4Q10 over 3Q10), fueled by the start of major 2G capacity upgrades in China and India as well as modernization projects in Europe, according to a report by Infonetics Research. India's BSNL Bans Huawei, ZTE from 5.5 Million Line GSM Contract

India's BSNL h­as formally barred China's Huawei and ZTE from bidding in the latest round in its on/off tender for some 5.5 million GSM lines for its Northern and Eastern zones. According to a report in the Economic Times newspaper, the state-owned telco has specified that only Ericsson, Nokia Siemens Networks and Alcatel Lucent will be able participate in the bidding process.  more

Telefonica Announces Wide-Spread Trials of LTE Networks

Telefonica says that it has reached an agreement with six LTE technology providers to launch LTE test projects in six different countries. Alcatel-Lucent May be Back-Up Vendor to Huawei's Indian Contract

More confusion over BSNL's mammoth GSM network tender after it emerged that alcatel-lucent may be asked to act as a back-up vendor for the contract awarded to Huawei covering the southern end of the country. The telco was told by the Department of Telecoms to be particularly vigilant when testing Huawei supplied hardware to ensure there are no exploits in the software installed at the request of the Chinese government.  more

Market research firm Infonetics Research is reporting that telecom carriers spent US$62 billion on outsourced services in 2008, and have plans to increase that spending. The report noted that the top revenue-generating tasks outsourced by service providers in 2008 include network maintenance, application service delivery, network build, and network planning and design.  more
