Vietnamese Network Signs Network Upgrade Contract
Vietnam's Vinaphone has contracted with alcatel-lucent to upgrade its GSM network in 16 northern provinces with EDGE data services. The contract was signed through alcatel-lucent's Chinese subsidiary, alcatel-lucent Shanghai Bell. The deployment is currently underway and the expanded network will begin providing commercial services in April 2009. more

Alcatel-Lucent to Expand China Mobile Pakistan's Network
alcatel-lucent has signed a contract worth US$52.9 million with China Mobile Pakistan (CMPak), to expand its existing GSM/EDGE network. The expansion, which is now underway, will allow CMPak to provide enhanced commercial services in northern Pakistan by the end of the first quarter of 2009. more

Alcatel-Lucent Offers Converged RAN for CDMA Networks Migrating to LTE
alcatel-lucent says that it has expanded its wireless networking portfolio to inlcude a Converged RAN" (radio access network) which enables mobile service providers to offer both 3G CDMA and LTE services using a common network infrastructure. One of the key elements of the Converged RAN is the software defined radio (SDR) technology which has been available on the current alcatel-lucent base stations for a number of years already. more

China Unicom Selects Alcatel-Lucent to Deploy 3G Networks in 14 Provinces
alcatel-lucent says that it has been selected by China Unicom to deploy 3G W-CDMA networks in 14 Chinese provinces. Initial network deployments in the cities of Tianjin, Baoding, Wenzhou, Taizhou, Guiyang and Guilin are expected to be completed in May, 2009. more

Alcatel-Lucent Cuts Power Consumption by Base Stations by a Quarter
alcatel-lucent announced an enhancement to its GSM/EDGE mobile networking portfolio which it says can reduce power consumption by up to 27 percent. The power reductions were demonstrated during January field trial this year with China Mobile in the country's Jiangsu province. On average, a 24 percent power saving has been achieved. more

Global Mobile Market to Exceed US$900 Billion in 2008
A report from IDATE says that the world telecom services market is estimated at US$1,365 billion in 2008 - a 4.2% increase over the year before - and is expected to be worth over US$1,416 billion in 2009. With a total turnover estimated at US$742.2 billion in 2008, mobile services account for 54% of the telecom services market and single handedly deliver all of the sector's growth. But the annual growth rate has dropped from more than 12% in 2007 to 8% in 2008. more
