Ericsson Tops LTE Infrastructure Market; Samsung Tops WiMAX - Report

After plunging in the second half of 2010, the GSM RAN market bounced back (up 38% in 4Q10 over 3Q10), fueled by the start of major 2G capacity upgrades in China and India as well as modernization projects in Europe, according to a report by Infonetics Research. LTE network equipment, including E-UTRAN (eNodeB) macrocells and Evolved Packet Core (EPC) equipment, jumped 704% in 2010 over 2009.  more

Egyptian Network Launches 3G Coverage in Cairo

The Egyptian Company for Mobile Services (Mobinil) has launched its 3G network following several delays, which the company partially put at the door of the telecoms regulator. The company had expected to receive access to the radio spectrum on 17th January, but the radio frequencies were not released until March 27th. The company had hoped to launch its network in July, but again missed its deadline.  more

Mozambique Operator to Speed Up Network Expansion

Mozambique GSM operator, mCel has announced plans to speed up its planned US$70 million investment to expand its network coverage in rural areas and improve urban network quality. In a statement, the company said that it would add some 110 new base stations by the end of the year to increase network capacity urban areas - and some 90 base stations in rural areas which are not currently covered.  more

T-Mobile Upgrades German Network to Support EDGE

T-Mobile Germany has completed a nationwide upgrade of its network to support EDGE services - which required a system hardware replacement in over 20,000 base stations. The frequency and field strength of the systems remain unchanged. New locations are not required.  more
