Afghan Wireless Completes 2,500km Microwave Ring for GSM Backhaul
Afghanistan's Afghan Wireless has announced the completion of its high
capacity digital Microwave Ring around the country. This is the first Microwave
Ring across the country in the history of Afghanistan covering a distance of
2,500 Kilometers and millions of dollars of investment. It passes through 18
provinces providing direct coverage and connectivity to the population residing
in surrounding areas.

Siemens has been awarded a contract to set up a W-CDMA network in Kabul for Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC). In addition to 3G technology, Siemens will also supply 2G equipment to the mobile operator in Afghanistan. more

Improved mobile services in Afghanistan
Afghanistan's Afghan Wireless has completed installation of a new 100,000-line Siemens mobile switch, which will significantly upgrade network capabilities as well as add capacity to Afghanistan's capital city network. The switch is currently being tested and is expected to be ready for commercial launch in the next few weeks. more

Afghanistan GSM license extended
Afghan Wireless has been formally awarded a national GSM Mobile Wireless Service License by the Ministry of Communications of the Transitional Islamic Government of Afghanistan. The license will be signed by officials from the Ministry and Afghan Wireless in a ceremony on July 10 at the Ministry Offices in downtown Kabul. more

Afghanistan's third GSM network starts trials
An international consortium lead by the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development has begun testing its GSM network in Kabul, Afghanistan. This is the country's second commercial GSM network, although a third license award has been claimed by Ariana Telecom which has yet to start building an infrastructure. There is also a GSM network in Kabul operated by Ericsson for the UN forces in the city. Telecom Development Company Afghanistan (TDCA), is owned by a consortium in which the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development holds 51%, Monaco Telecom International 35% and MCT Corp. 9%. France's Alcatel holds 5% and is providing vendor loan financing of US$55 million for the network equipment. more

Bluefish says that its SIMs are now being used in the handsets of subscribers to Afghanistan's first cellular phone network. The project, which started in 2002 in Kabul now provides GSM communications to the other key cities of Kandahar, Herat, and Mazar-i-Sharif. more

Afghanistan's GSM network upgrades
The USA based Telephone Systems International (TSI) has agreed to purchase US$4.3 million worth of GSM switching equipment from Siemens Mobile. The equipment, including a Siemens switch, will support TSI's subsidiary, the Afghan Wireless Communication Company (AWCC), which operates the first commercial mobile phone system in Afghanistan. The switch will be installed in Kabul and will be integrated into the existing AWCC network, which currently supports up to 40,000 users. more

Kabul's police and fire services given GSM handsets
Afghanistan's first GSM network, Afghan Wireless has donated 30 GSM handsets and mobile service to Kabul's police and fire departments. The donation will be utilized to facilitate emergency response throughout the city of Kabul. Afghan Wireless' presentation of the mobile phones and GSM local mobile service took place on 24 October, 2002 at the Ministry of Interior in Kabul. Prior to this event, Kabul police and fire response units were hindered by limited access to communications. more
