Alcatel-Lucent Wins Rural USA 3G Network Contract
Alcatel-Lucent says that it has won a WCDMA based 3G network contract from Minnesota-based NewCore Wireless, a wholesale provider of wireless communications services. Alcatel-Lucent also will provide a comprehensive suite of professional services in conjunction with this expansion contract, including installation, commissioning, program management, on-site training, network rollout and integration. more

Bell Canada 3rd Quarter Profits Hit by Restructuring Costs
Bell Canada (BCE) has reported that its 3rd quarter profits dropped by 34% caused by restructuring charges as the firm prepares to delist from the stock market. Bell's operating revenues grew by 1.8% to $3.76 billion (US2.9 billion) this quarter as growth in wireless, video, and data revenues more than offset declines in local and access, long distance, and equipment and other revenues. Revenues from Bell's growth services portfolio of wireless, video, high-speed Internet and other services, such as ICT solutions, grew by 8% and now represent 60% of Bell's revenues. more

Small US Operators Form Trade Purchasing Body
Twenty-eight independent mobile operators and commercial mobile license owners in the USA have established a new company, NextGen Mobile, to help promote the existence of small and rural wireless companies throughout the country. The company grew out of a year-long dialog between existing mobile operators and winners of Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) and 700 MHz licenses in recent FCC auctions. more

Unencumbered AWS-III Spectrum Worth $2.8 Billion
A Phoenix Center analysis released today finds that the FCC's proposed nationwide 25 MHz license in the Advanced Wireless Services ("AWS") band would fetch at auction approximately $2.8 billion if the license did not contain substantial conditions or encumbrances. Phoenix Center Chief Economist George S. Ford's Perspective utilizes the results of prior auctions in the AWS band and the recent record-setting 700 MHz auction to make this estimate, which resulted in an auction value of approximately $0.40 per MHz-pop. more

Canada to Allow a 4th National Cellular Carrier
Canada is preparing to allow the entry of a 4th nationwide operator in the country after the Minister of Industry, Jim Prentice has released details on how the auction for Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) spectrum, to be held next May will be conducted. Of the 105 megahertz (MHz) of spectrum to be made available, 40 MHz will be set aside exclusively for new entrants to bid on. The other 65 MHz will be available to all bidders. more
