Australian Regulator Tests Telstra Network

Australian Regulator Identifies More Wireless Spectrum for Use
The Australian Communications and Media Authority says that it has identified additional spectrum that could potentially be used to support future wireless access services in Australia. Making additional spectrum available for wireless access services can support competition and diversity in the provision of broadband services. It can also help to satisfy the unmet demand for spectrum, particularly in regional Australia, which was evident in submissions to the discussion paper Strategies for Wireless Access Services released in February this year. more

Australia Considering Mandatory PrePay Registration
The Australian Communications and Media Authority has commenced a review of the way in which telephone companies collect identity information about their pre-paid mobile phone customers. As part of the review, acma has released a discussion paper, Identity Checks for Pre-paid Mobile Services. The paper notes that the review is occurring because the data being produced by current processes is of insufficient quality and consistency. The paper also outlines potential changes to the identity checking process to reduce industry costs and provide a simpler process for consumers. more
