Over 90 Million 4G Subscribers Worldwide by 2013
The total number of 4G subscribers worldwide, including both LTE and WiMAX, is expected to exceed 90 million in 2013, but a number of milestones must be passed en route, according to a new forecast from ABI Research. At the end of 4Q 2007, says the firm, there were nearly 3.4 billion mobile subscribers worldwide, with 2.7 billion on GSM/EDGE/GPRS networks. more

Network operators are planning to roll out all-IP networks beginning in the next two years, according to a new Research Brief from ABI Research. The move to an Internet Protocol-based infrastructure is a natural evolution for the mobile network as broadband services -- including Voice over IP, and other SIP services -- begin to be deployed. US Mobile WiMAX Market Moves from Uncertain to Vibrant
Just a little over a year ago, most people thought the United States would only see deployments of fixed WiMAX in rural areas with no DSL or cable modem service. During the summer of 2006, however, those who did not see the bigger picture got a reality-check. In July, Clearwire made a firm commitment to shift its proprietary network to mobile WiMAX, receiving investments from Intel and Motorola. Shortly afterwards, Sprint Nextel announced its plans to deploy mobile WiMAX to make use of its extensive 2.5 GHz spectrum, becoming the first major mobile operator to commit to WiMAX. more
